ANCIENT INDIAN STRINGS

DHRUPAD   GURUKUL   PALASPA

 Established In 1982

The concept of making a Gurukul was entirely Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's. He envisioned a place where he would sit with his disciple and impart training in the 'Guru Shishya Parampara ' a method in which a few selected students.Students study under one roof  whilst staying with the guru. Ustad sahib put at least twenty years of his time and effort to give shape to this idea on his own and thus, the Gurukul came into being  in 1982. In the earlier years he would visit it every Saturday and Sunday . After 1986, he started to visit this place more regularly and even stay for longer periods of time. It was his aim and i {bahauddin], also heard him say in the July of 1990 that " Now I shall spend the next year teaching and nurturing the students here " and requested Smt Pramila Dagar ,my mother to not take any appointments. He conducted one final tour of Europe and Spic Macay India and returned. But he fell ill and passed away soon after .His untimely death was a shock to all his students and friends.

After his death my mother Pramila Dagar took it onto herself to keep the place alive. she would conduct whole nigh baithaks by the students for many years till the recent times .

After a few years when my uncle resigned from Dhrupad Kendra ,Bhopal ,he came to Palspa as a teacher in residence. He stays and  teaches there now.

This Gurukul in the beginning conducted a whole lot of workshops and  baithaks for students who were willing to learn Dhrupad as a hobby and even encourage listening sessions.

The well wishers of Gurukul also set up the 'Ustad Ziauddin Dagar Memorial Trust' which conducts a three day Dhrupad festival in memory of Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar called BARSI.

Very recently the Gurukul has changed it's view on teaching and is only accepting students who are interested in doing something more than just a hobby. Such students are now selected under the keen eye of Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar

Here's a picture of one of  Gurupoornima Days when some of the students have come together to pay respect to Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar at his shrine.
